Rationale:

Mild malformation of cortical development (mMCD) with excessive heterotopic neurons is a recognized cause of refractory epilepsy, however, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the electro-clinical signature of this subtype of focal cortical dysplasia. This study aims to understand the characteristics of patients with refractory epilepsy due to mMCD adding insight and better understanding of this condition.

Methods:

This is a retrospective review of electro-clinical and imaging characteristics of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy who underwent epilepsy surgery at Cleveland clinic foundation between 1997-2023, with pathological results confirmed mMCD with excessive heterotropic neurons. Comparisons were made using Kruskal-Wallis test and Wilcoxon rank sum test for continuous variables, and Fisher’s exact test for categorical variables.

All analyses were performed in R, version 4.3.1 [1]. All tests were two-sided and p-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.
