Rationale:
Background:
According to The World Health Organization (WHO), 50 million people worldwide live with epilepsy, with 75% residing in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC). Many healthcare systems in these regions lack trained neurologists, and even fewer have access to EEG equipment and EEG Technicians, both of which are essential for diagnosing epilepsy. Despite EEG being the most reliable procedure in epilepsy diagnosis, limited financial resources in LMIC contribute to significant gaps in availability of EEG equipment and training of personnel.
Methods:
Innovation and Impact:
The Neurotech Foundation (501c3) has sponsored the development of EEG Technicians in LMICs and donating equipment since 2021. A 54-week ABRET approved technologist training program was developed and used to remotely teach nurses, clinical officers, and physicians through The Neurotech EEG Institute (NEI). Through June 2025, 78 EEG Technicians from 17 LMICs countries, representing 31 healthcare facilities, had graduated from the NEI program.
The survey of participating LMIC facilities was conducted to assess the impact of the collaboration with Neurotech Foundation and NEI on EEG practices.
Results:
Results:
Fifteen of thirty-one healthcare facilities responded to the survey. All participating facilities reported either increased volumes of EEG or initiation if EEG services. The proportion of facilities performing more than 30 EEGs per month increased from 6.5% to 74% following the addition of equipment and trained technicians.
