RATIONALE: In metabolic encephalopathies or endocrine disorder, seizures occur frequently. But the incidence of seizures in thyrotoxicosis patients is controversial. We evaluated the incidence, clinical features and prognosis of seizures in thyrotoxicosis.
METHODS: We retrospectively found 8 patients who developed seizures with thyrotoxicosis. We analyzed their medical records.
RESULTS: From 1985 to 2000, 2854 thyrotoxicosis patients were admitted to our hospital and among them 8 patients were treated with acute seizure disorder. The incidence of seizures in hyperthyroidism was 0.3 %. Electroencephalogram of 5 patients were normal, 1 patient showed diffuse cerebral dysfunction and 2 patients showed epileptiform discharges. Three patients were experienced no further seizures without anticonvulsant drug(AED) after thyroid treatment and the seizures of other patients were well controlled with low dosage AED.
CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of seizures in thyrotoxicosis was high. The clinical prognosis of seizures in thyrotoxicosis was not severe.
