RATIONALE: The Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) represents a treatment method for patients with therapy-resistant epilepsies. Its effectiveness is similar to that of new antiepileptic drugs. In judging the success of therapy, the exact documentation of seizure frequency is the deciding factor. With the computer treatment calendar (Epivista) it is possible to record the parameters of the VNS along with antiepileptic therapy and seizure frequency, and to produce these graphically.
METHODS: The following can be documented: a) standard parameters (Signal On Time 30 seconds; Signal Off Time 5 minutes) und b) rapid-cycle parameters (Signal On Time 7 seconds; Signal Off Time 0,5 minutes), during which time the output current may be adjusted in increments of 0,25 milliamperes. The data of 28 patients have been entered into this computer treatment calendar.
RESULTS: The graphs of all 28 patients show at a glance how the frequency of seizures are influenced by constant medication through the VNS parameters.
CONCLUSIONS: The graphs give a comprehensive overview and allow the effectiveness of VNS to be judged well. These graphs can be very helpful in optimizing individual patients` stimulation parameters.
