R. Edward Hogan, MD, FAES Installed as President of the American Epilepsy Society

CHICAGO – R. Edward Hogan, MD, FAES, begins his term as president of the American Epilepsy Society (AES) at the conclusion of the Society’s annual meeting in Chicago (Dec. 3- 7, 2021). A medical and scientific society of 4,200 members, the AES is dedicated to advancing research and education for preventing, treating and curing epilepsy.

Dr. R. Edward “Ed” Hogan is a professor in the Department of Neurology at Washington University in St. Louis, and the Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Barnes Jewish Hospital.  His research interests are in the pharmacology and clinical use of antiepileptic medications, and neuro-imaging changes in patients with epileptic seizures. He is involved in clinical trials in epilepsy, and neuro-imaging studies of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and functional/structural MRI. Goals of his clinical and research efforts are to both provide and improve medical and surgical treatment of epileptic seizures.

Dr. Hogan has served on the Executive Committee of AES since 2020, including most recently as First Vice President and Chair of the Governance Committee.  He previously served on its Board of Directors (2015-2017), as Chair of the Council on Education (2012-2014), Chair of the Annual Meeting Committee (2008-2010), and as a Contributing Editor-Clinical of Epilepsy Currents.

Dr. Hogan earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He completed his neurology residency at Case Western Reserve University and his fellowship in epilepsy at the Case Western Reserve University and The Royal Melbourne Hospital.  He is board certified in neurology, neurophysiology, and epilepsy.
