BALTIMORE – R. Edward “Ed” Hogan, M.D., has been elected second vice president of the
American Epilepsy Society (AES), which is dedicated to advancing research and education for
preventing, treating and curing epilepsy. Dr. Hogan’s term will begin at the end of the
society's annual meeting in Baltimore (Dec. 6-10, 2019). He will serve three years in the
society's presidential line and begin his term as President in 2022.
Dr. Hogan is a professor in the Department of Neurology at Washington University in St. Louis
and the director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Barnes Jewish Hospital. He earned
his medical degree from the University of Missouri–Columbia. He completed his neurology
residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and his fellowship in epilepsy at
the Case Western Reserve University and The Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia. He is
board certified in neurology, neurophysiology and epilepsy.
Dr. Hogan has research interests in multiple areas of clinical neurology and epilepsy including
the pharmacology and clinical use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), semiology of epileptic
seizures and neuro-imaging changes in patients with epileptic seizures. His research in neuroimaging involves single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) as well as functional
and structural MRI, including correlation of neuroimaging with clinical semiology of seizures
and EEG findings. His research goals include a better understanding of the pathophysiology of
epileptic seizures to improve both the medical and surgical treatment of epileptic seizures.
From his early training in epilepsy, Dr. Hogan has valued the unique role that the AES plays in
the epilepsy community as a professional organization. He has served as a voting member of
the Board of the American Epilepsy Society (2015-2017), chair of the Council on Education
(2012-2014), chair of the Annual Meeting Committee (2008-2010), and most recently,
contributing editor-clinical of Epilepsy Currents, AES’ open access commentary journal.
