LOS ANGELES ― Howard P. Goodkin, MD, PhD, FAES, begins his term as president of the American Epilepsy Society (AES) at the conclusion of the Society’s 2024 Annual Meeting, held in Los Angeles, Dec. 6-10, 2024. A medical and scientific society of 5,300 members, AES is dedicated to advancing research and education for preventing, treating and curing epilepsy.

Dr. Goodkin is the Shure Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. He serves as director of the Division of Pediatric Neurology. He received his undergraduate medical education at Washington University, St. Louis, and his postgraduate medical education at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. He is an active clinical pediatric epileptologist, successful educator and accomplished researcher focused on deepening the understanding of the prolonged seizures of status epilepticus. 

Dr. Goodkin has been a committed AES member for more than 20 years. He has served on multiple committees including the Scientific Program and Annual Meeting Committees. He has chaired the Continuing Medical Education Review and Education and Professional Development Committees, and has co-chaired the Basic Mechanisms SIG and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force. He has served as the Society’s treasurer and, most recently, as first vice president. He was honored in 2018 as a co-presenter of the Lennox & Lombroso lecture with Dr. Jaideep Kapur. His AES accomplishments include assisting in the development of the inaugural Epilepsy Fellowship Curriculum and the BRIDGE Summer Research Internship program for undergraduate scientists who identify as members of historically underrepresented groups in medical and/or research careers.
